WD My Cloud EX2 review: Everything a connected home needs

There is no user interface or media server with this device. Another fantastic source of information and great for reviews is video content. Below we’ve run a search for WD My Cloud Home NAS Drive on YouTube if you wanted to check out some of the video reviews that may have been created by customers or expert reviewers.

The WD My Cloud EX2 comes with two USB 3.0 ports on the back to host more storage via external hard drives. In the My Cloud, WD has combined data sharing, media streaming, backups, and a powerful personal cloud feature in a single compact box that everybody can use. On top of that, for the first time, home users can really expect from an affordable device the data speeds of a much more expensive NAS server. And the device is very affordable, costing just $180 with 4TB of storage space included. Where the My Cloud lags behind the Seagate Central is its limited USB support; you can only connect external drives and the fact that you really can do nothing in the cloud interface with your data. However, the My Cloud is sure to win fans, especially heavy HD video streamers, and it's an easy four-star earner for consumer NAS devices, edged out only by the Seagate Central.

This private share folder is only available to that user and nobody else. After that, the software will create desktop shortcuts to the server's public share and for its Dashboard Web interface. This interface provides access to all of the server's settings and features. The device also can be accessed with mobile devices where users can view files, backup files such as photos and videos, check on the status of the device, and share files with others. Like other devices in the My Cloud family, the EX2 Ultra is easy to set up.

Working within the interface and applying settings was a bit peppier in performance than with the Seagate Central. One aspect of the My Cloud that makes me leery is that you are not prompted for login when you click on the shortcut from the desktop to get into the dashboard and I did not see a way to add authentication. Delivery time is estimated using our proprietary method which is based on the buyer's proximity to the item location, the delivery service selected, the seller's delivery history and other factors.

BACK UP MULTIPLE COMPUTERS & DEVICES – PC backup software included, and you can set up automated backups of data on your computers and mobile devices. SECURELY SHARE FILES WITH FAMILY & FRIENDS – Create individual access of folders to ensure your data remains private while securely share storage space or files with others. The roots of the My Cloud come from WD’s existing My Book range of backup hard drives. Over the years WD has refined the My Book design and it translates well to My Cloud with subtle rounded corners and a clean, minimalist finish that suggests it could’ve come off an Apple product line. The fact WD has released My Cloud in white is not an insignificant factor.

The EX2 shares the same Web interface as others in the My Cloud series, which is very organized and self-explanatory. That said, if you use the My Cloud EX2 with a group of computers with no need for data privacy among themselves, there's really nothing to setting up the My Cloud, other than plugging it in. Today, WD announced the latest member in its user-friendly My Cloud series, the EX2 NAS server, which turns out to be among the best of its type. Additionally, once or twice, cancelling copy procedures forced a restart of Windows Explorer, after which the My Cloud Home Duo was no longer available.

I have several Western Digital NAS drives from the My Book to the My Cloud for backing up multiple computers. I had to juggle four different interfaces on three devices to get everything installed and configured. My TV and PS3 don't recognize it as a media server, so it's basically useless if it won't stream through PLEX.

The device's only shortcoming is its mobile app, which could use some improvement, and I have no doubt that will happen via updates. And even at its current stage, with a price tag of just $250 for the top capacity of 4TB, the My Cloud is a steal. At this speed, the server can easily handle multiple data-intensive tasks at a time, such as backing up multiple computers while streaming HD video to multiple network players.

Some brands are known for manufacturing much better quality products. As I’m sure you’re aware, brands like WD are really well respected for making great External hard drives. That means file transfers to and from your devices are handled over Wi-Fi, but it also means you can get at your data at any time from anywhere. You don't have to leave a particular desktop or laptop computer on for your files and folders to be accessible. We tested the 8TB, two-drive My Cloud Home Duo, which sports a single gigabit ethernet port and two Type-A USB 3.0 ports on the back. (There’s also a single-drive unit with only a single USB port.) Directly above those ports is a thin power button, and below is a reset button and the AC port.

That, plus the excellent performance, the affordability, and the ease of use make it an ideal choice for an entry-level, yet robust, network storage device. What the EX2's mobile app lacks, the server more than makes up for in performance. I tested the My Cloud EX2 in RAID 1 -- mostly to emphasize the fact that it is how the server should be used for data safety reasons -- and it excelled.

If you're looking for a dual-bay server that offers similar performance with much more advanced features, however, also check out a dual-bay server from Synology, such as the DS712+. The EX2's interface is well-organized and easy to use, and offers access to all of the server's customizations and settings. The WD My Cloud Home features the company’s new two-tone, half-sculpted design motif that we first saw in the My Passport series earlier this year. With the thin power LED separating the two halves on the front, it presents a striking countenance that’s not necessarily reminiscent of NAS. That’s a good thing, especially considering the keep-it-simple audience it’s playing to.

You are shown a listing of your folders and then given the option to open the folder in Windows Explorer . That is fine, because you can do anything you need to do with your data from Explorer. However with Seagate Central, I was able to upload and download files; create new folders; manage user settings; and even view my images in a slideshow-- all from Central's cloud interface. I like the option of managing my data through the cloud UI or via the local operating system file manager. Like its brethren, the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra is easy to use and is supported by a simplistic user interface.

First, there's no search, meaning you have to manually browse for content. And since the content is not automatically organized by type, you generally have to dig though folders and sub folders to find what you want. This might be OK if you have just videos or not much content to go through, otherwise, this could be a frustrating experience, especially with music or photos. To make things worse, there's no back button to bring you back the previous folder level.

MacOS Big Sure has been out for over 8 months, and companies have had access to the latest OS for over a year. Both backup programs recommended by Western Digital for this device do not work. Below are some of the other great products that customers view after checking out WD My Cloud Home NAS Drive.

Standard deviation gave us another example of the Ultra having higher latency than the non-Ultra version. While the write latency in CIFS was the lowest over all at 183.05ms, the Ultra trailed behind the non-Ultra on all the rest. The Ultra had an incredibly high write latency in iSCSI at 1,899.28ms. Looking at max latency we saw that the Ultra had the lowest write latency in CIRS with 2,295.5ms but its write latency in iSCSI was the highest overall at 8,800.4ms. It had superior read latency in both iSCSI and CIFS compared to the non-Ultra model. We first took a look at 4K performance at 100% read/100% write activity.
